Matthew's Notes
We are proud to offer one of the true holy grails of mid-century horology: a spectacular first-generation Universal Genève Tri-Compax Reference 22259 from the mid-1940s. Launched to celebrate the brand's 50th anniversary, the Tri-Compax represents a pinnacle of vintage complications, seamlessly integrating a full calendar, moon phase, and a high-grade mechanical chronograph. Among collectors, Reference 22259 is highly coveted for its distinctive "Fat Lugs" case architecture. While later mid-century chronographs shifted toward streamlined, slender proportions, this early-generation piece retains a robust, muscular profile that commands exceptional presence on the wrist. The case features thick, heavily faceted rectangular lugs with slight aging on the back of the case. This aggressive geometry creates a striking contrast against the round bezel, giving the watch a remarkably modern, architectural wrist profile. Powering this masterclass in micro-engineering is the legendary, manual-winding UG Caliber 481. This movement sits beautifully within the 34.5mm case, allowing for a tight, concentric sub-dial configuration that maximizes readability while maintaining perfect visual balance. The dual windows at 12 o’clock neatly track the day and month, flanked by a moon phase aperture and an integrated pointer date track. Arabic numerals give the dial a warm vintage character, sharply accented by a striking blued-steel central chronograph hand and a vibrant red date pointer hand. The dial as well as the hands are all original.
