Matthew's Notes
We are very pleased to offer this extraordinary grail piece of military aviation history: a vintage first-generation Breguet Type XX Flyback Chronograph featuring the highly coveted 3-register dial configuration. While the standard French military-issued Aéronavale Type XX chronographs utilized a 2-register layout, this exceptionally rare 3-register execution includes a 12-hour recorder at 6 o'clock. Primarily produced for civilian pilots, the French Air Force or CEV (Centre d'Essais en Vol), these 3-register variants represent the pinnacle of mid-century tool watch design and are fiercely sought after by vintage collectors. The watch features a beautifully preserved 1st generation matte black dial adorned with the highly desirable, early vintage cursive "Breguet" script logo below 12 o'clock. The tritium Arabic numerals and hands have aged gracefully, offering immense vintage character. The 38mm stainless steel case features sharp straight lugs and is fitted with a bidirectional rotating countdown bezel with engraved Arabic numerals. Powering this legendary watch is a manually wound movement featuring a Flyback complication. This purpose-built military feature allowed pilots to instantly reset and restart the chronograph with a single press of the lower pusher, crucial for precise aerial navigation. I have sold quite a few of these over the years, but I still love when I get one of these rare beauties in. This watch comes with a copy of an email from Breguet confirming its original sale in 1967.
