Matthew's Notes

We are thrilled to offer this stunningly rare, mid-1960s Universal Genève Aero-Compax Reference 890100/01, bearing a highly desirable 2.36M serial number that dates its production precisely to 1964.   A holy grail for aviation watch collectors, engineered during the golden age of aviation as a pure tool watch for professional pilots and navigators, the Aero-Compax stands out as one of the most mechanically fascinating and visually arresting chronographs ever produced by the legendary house of Universal Genève.   Unlike traditional chronographs, this masterpiece features a striking 24-hour dial layout designed to give pilots instant readability and clear AM/PM orientation during long-distance or polar flights. The inverse-colored, bi-directional rotating external 24-hour bezel allows the wearer to effortlessly track a second time zone, making it a true, early dual-time companion. At the 3 o’clock position sits the watch’s signature complication: a dedicated 15-minute sub-register, purposefully designed to time standard airplane pre-takeoff safety checks.  Powering this mechanical marvel is the legendary, manual-wind Venus Caliber 178 movement, modified by Universal Genève to drive the specialized 24-hour display.   The stainless steel case of this watch is unpolished with beautiful thick lugs.  All numbering is clearly visible on the case back which does show some wear.  The all original white dial is beautifully preserved with rich contrasting dark accents.  The syringe hands and distinct hour markers retain their vintage character and original lume while perfectly balancing military-spec utility with mid-century elegance.
