Matthew's Notes
Introduced in 1968, the Patek Philippe Golden Ellipse instantly broke away from traditional watch design with its unique elliptical case. Its proportions are directly inspired by the "Golden Ratio" (1:1.618), a geometric principle discovered by ancient Greek mathematicians that represents the ideal architectural harmony. This rare vintage 1970s white gold variant perfectly exemplifies that timeless minimalism. Dating to 1973, this watch represents an era when Patek Philippe leaned heavily into sleek, avant-garde elegance, creating a design that sits effortlessly flat against the wrist. This specific timepiece stands out due to its cream-white dial featuring stark black Roman numeral indices and elongated baton hands. Unlike the common blue metallic dials found on this reference, the white dial offers an exceptionally clean, high-contrast tuxedo look suitable for formal occasions or daily understated luxury. Housed inside the ultra-thin, two-piece snap-on case is the legendary Caliber 28-255 automatic movement. Revered by horologists as one of the finest and thinnest automatic mechanisms ever engineered, this movement utilizes a full-sized 21k gold rotor rim and was famously used as the foundational movement for the original Patek Philippe Nautilus Ref. 3700. This wonderful watch has its original white gold Patek Philippe tang buckle and also comes with an Archive from Patek Philippe.
