Matthew's Notes
This is a gorgeous reference 7934 Tudor Oyster Shock-Resisting wristwatch from 1964. The all original dial is what I LOVE about this watch. Aside from the from the shiny black dial being all original with wonderful silver gilt writing and dagger hour indices, the dial has the TUDOR Rose insignia as well as an "Underline" below the Shock-Resistant wording. This "Underline" has a very specific meaning. During the early 1960s, the watchmaking industry was rapidly phasing out highly radioactive radium and transitioning to safer, lower-radiation tritium. Because the visual design of the dials didn't change overnight, Rolex factory dial makers needed a way to signal that a specific batch of dials complied with new, safer radiation regulations. The tiny underline was printed on the dial as a safety visual anchor. It allowed custom-house inspectors, watchmakers, and factory workers to instantly know at a glance that the watch face emitted much lower radioactive strength and was safe to handle. These "Underline" dials were only manufactured for a very narrow window of time—roughly between late 1962 and early 1964. Because they were only made for such a short period, surviving examples of the Tudor Oyster , like this Ref. 7934, featuring an original underline dial are quite rare. Collectors actively look for this specific quirk. The stainless steel case is nice and strong and has been polished in its lifetime. A period correct unmarked 'beads of rice' bracelet has been fitted on the watch and it looks excellent.
