Matthew's Notes
This is an exceptional example of the Rolex reference 6239 “Paul Newman” Daytona, dating to 1968. This particular configuration is the same model famously worn by Paul Newman, whose personal watch sold at auction for $17.8 million.
We previously wrote a story about how we acquired this remarkable piece (link to story).
The watch is in excellent condition, with an attractive, naturally worn yet unpolished case. The dial is 100% original and exceptionally well preserved. The red outer track and lettering remain remarkably bright, while the original luminous material is fully intact—something increasingly difficult to find on these early Paul Newman Daytonas.
The Valjoux caliber 722-1 movement has recently been fully overhauled and is in excellent working order. The watch is fitted with an original period Rolex folded Oyster bracelet.
Overall, this is a highly attractive and well-preserved example of one of the most iconic and collectible vintage Rolex chronographs ever produced.
