The Veteran Trick Every New Vintage Rolex Collector Should Learn

How a simple tactile test can save you from costly mistakes when buying vintage watches.

Some tricks of the trade become so ingrained over time that they’re almost impossible to explain—they just happen. For me, evaluating a vintage watch has become second nature after my decades in the business. But every so often, a question or encounter reminds me just how much of that instinct can be shared.

The other day, a new watch flipper came to see me with a Rolex Submariner Ref. 5513—a classic model and a watch we see frequently at Matthew Bain Inc. He handed me the watch and started explaining its background. Within fifteen seconds, I politely handed it back and said, “No, thank you.”

He looked surprised, maybe even a little disappointed. Then curiosity took over. “How could you know so quickly?” he asked.

It wasn’t anything he said—or even something I consciously saw. It was what I felt.

Why Feeling a Watch Matters More Than Seeing It

Whenever someone hands me a vintage Rolex, the first thing I do is hold it—really hold it. That simple gesture serves two important purposes:

  1. It allows me to listen. When I’m holding the watch, I can focus on the person in front of me—their story, the provenance, their motivation. That human connection matters.

  2. It gives me an honest read on condition. The hands often tell the truth faster than the eyes. By touch alone, I can sense details that reveal a watch’s authenticity and history:

    • The heft of the case

    • The sharpness of chamfers and edges

    • The alignment of the bezel and case parts

    • The thickness and symmetry of the lugs, and even size/placement of lug holes

    • Any subtle surface irregularities

Years of handling thousands of watches train your fingers to detect the difference between factory originality, honest wear, and over-polished restoration. It’s not magic—it’s muscle memory.

Seeing With Your Hands: A Skill Any Collector Can Learn

Experience sharpens instinct, but every expert started as a beginner. For those just entering the world of vintage watches, start by spending time with as many pieces as you can. Hold them. Feel their differences. Learn what sharp, worn, or refinished cases feel like.

With practice, you’ll begin to “see” with your hands—an intuitive skill that can save you from expensive mistakes and deepen your appreciation for craftsmanship.
