The Joy of Discovery: The Remarkable Patek Philippe Ref 2543

I was in New York for the spring auction season and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the offerings from Sotheby’s, Christie’s, and Phillips. I was actively bidding in all three sales and was fortunate to come away with several successful purchases. It was also refreshing not to be competing against an unusually strong Swiss franc or facing the uncertainty of high U.S. import tariffs.

During the previews, one watch at Sotheby’s immediately stood out. I remember saying to myself, “This watch will be mine.”

It was a Patek Philippe reference 2543.

The watch features a highly unusual dial variation with a striking rainbow chapter ring and beautiful Arabic numerals that give it incredible character. The case is elegant and understated, almost Calatrava-like, yet unlike any Patek Philippe case design I had seen before.

Apparently, I wasn’t the only one who felt that way. There were several determined bidders, and the watch ultimately realized $82,000! The original listed auction estimate was $10,000-$20,000 USD. Fortunately, I was the winning bidder.

After acquiring the watch, I began researching the reference in greater depth. To my surprise, I could not find another example of the reference 2543 having appeared on the market. Based on everything I have been able to uncover, I believe this may be the only known example.

I knew the watch was exceptionally rare, but discovering that it could be unique made the acquisition even more rewarding. Not only is it a beautiful and historically important Patek Philippe, but it is also one of the rarest Patek Philippe wristwatches I have ever owned.

Moments like this are what keep the passion alive. The opportunity to discover what may be an unknown or unique Patek Philippe is one of the greatest joys of being a collector and dealer.
