I just came back from a buying trip where I came across an early Patek Philippe reference 3970!

The moment I first saw the watch, my eyes lit up. The case was filled with beautiful patina, and it even had a Patek service sticker still on the back. This gift kept on giving, as I found out it had its original papers, Archive Certificate, Patek service papers, pin pusher, and pamphlets. My heart was pounding. Not only did this watch have a killer case, but it was accompanied by all the “case candy” collectors dream about.
This particular watch is an early second-series reference 3970 from 1988 and it's considered a transitional model - one of the most interesting executions of the legendary perpetual calendar chronograph.
The reference 3970 succeeded the iconic reference 2499 and marked the beginning of a new era for Patek Philippe. The earliest examples were the first-series snap-back models, produced in very small numbers from approximately 1986 to 1987. These are incredibly rare and highly coveted by collectors.
This example is from the second series, produced shortly after, and represents a fascinating transition between the first snap-back generation and the later standard screw-back models. These early second-series watches still retain many of the charming traits collectors love from the first series: the strong, thick case proportions, early-style dial layout with the early model leaf hands and strait markers. Also, the Patek Philippe signature is thinner than in the later series, the day date apertures have an earlier serif style, and the moonphase/date ring numerals have a bolder typewriter look.

The second-series introduced the more practical solid screw-back case while still preserving much of the first-series DNA. The hallmarks only exist on the back of the case and not on the lugs which makes a cleaner look. These watches are often referred to as the sweet spot for collectors: rarer and more romantic in design than later examples, but more wearable and service-friendly than the delicate snap-back first series.

Inside beats the legendary Lemania-based CH 27-70 Q, one of the most respected perpetual calendar chronograph movements ever used by Patek Philippe. Elegant, beautifully finished, and mechanically significant, it remains one of the great modern classic calibers.
What makes this particular watch even more exciting is the completeness. Original papers, Extract from the Archives, service documentation, accessories, and a beautifully preserved case all elevate it to another level. In today’s market, collectors are placing enormous premiums on complete, honest examples; especially early production pieces like this.

Discovering watches like this is what keeps the passion alive after all these years. Even after decades in the business, there are still moments when a watch stops you in your tracks and reminds you why we all started.
