The Hunt Pays Off: Discovering a Patek Philippe Ref. 3428 in Rose Gold at the Miami Beach Show

I was genuinely excited walking into this year’s Miami Beach Antique Show, but I had no idea just how strong it would start.
It was setup day, that unique window when only dealers are supposed to be on the floor preparing their booths. Typically, it’s a controlled environment, just fellow dealers unpacking, organizing, and quietly trading among themselves. But this year was a bit different. There were noticeably more people roaming the floor than usual, some who clearly didn’t belong there. You could feel a new intensity: the competition for fresh material was building and starting sooner than ever.
A Whisper Before the Storm
Early on, another friendly dealer mentioned to me that he had something special coming in with his Brinks shipment and told me to circle back once it arrived.
I’m glad I listened.
When I returned to his booth, he pulled out what can only be described as one of the most exciting finds I’ve had in years: a Patek Philippe ref. 3428 in rose gold.
Not just any example, one that checked every box.
First Impressions: Shock and Recognition
At first glance, the 3428 carries the familiar DNA of the iconic ref. 2526 but there are subtle differences. When you have it in hand you can't help but note that the case is slightly thinner, yet the lines are still elegant and balanced.
What truly sets the 3428 and 2526 apart from the pack are the dials.

This example features a second-generation enamel dial, where the applied markers sit flat against the surface unlike earlier executions. The look is cleaner, more refined, and unmistakably Patek Philippe.
Movement Evolution
Inside, the watch is powered by Patek Philippe’s caliber 27-460 an evolution of the earlier 12-600 found in the 2526.

That progression matters.
It represents Patek refining one of its most important automatic movements with:
Increased jewel count
Continued focus on precision and durability
Improved serviceability
Thinner layout
Same commitment to finishing and performance
Classic mid-century Patek engineering at its finest.
Condition: The Real Story
What truly put this watch over the top, and honestly left me in shock, was the condition. When you have pieces from this era in hand you expect some wear and tear of a full-lifetime. Yet, reviewing this on the floor my usual expectations were blanked out.
When you start on one of these you work backwards and go straight to the dial, you turn it in your hand and let the light play off the surface. You hunt for hairlines or worse. This displayed none, just a uniform return of the light to my eye against a perfect enamel dial! No hairlines. No cracks.

Not sure if you do it too, but I have a subconscious reflex to hold my breath as I give these dials their first look. Call it being careful, or maybe it's just plain old-school superstition? This time it worked. And as I released my breath in relief, I looked away to let my eyes re-adjust and allowed my hands to proceed the next part of my review.
By feel you get a great idea of the case condition. It helps you understand if lines are uniform or altered, and it catches on any dings, dents, etc. Once again, in that moment I didn't find any of the expected signs of reconditioning or harm from years past. As I looked down to follow up with the eye review, I'd see that this was indeed an unpolished case with crisp lines!
Anyone who understands these watches knows that the dial alone accounts for the majority of the value; easily 70% or more. A great dial, and a great case, is something we usually wish for - and tend to fall short of.
Finding one this clean is incredibly rare.
Rarity: A True Collector’s Piece
After digging through auction records and catalogs, the numbers speak for themselves.
To my research, there are only approximately 5 known examples in rose gold.
That puts this watch in an entirely different category.
Not rare, it’s ultra-rare.
A Strong Start to the Show
Needless to say, this purchase set the tone for the event early.
In a year where the show floor felt more competitive than ever, with more eyes, more dealers, more pressure - landing a watch like this right out of the gate was something special.
The hunt was officially on!
