The Elusive R-series Rolex Daytona

August 28, 2014

Rolex Oyster CosmographRolex Oyster PerpetualThese two watches are the older R series manual wind Daytona reference 6265 and its successor reference 16520. In 1987 the manual wind, Valijoux based Rolex Daytona was on its way to retirement to make room for the newer highly anticipated Zenith Automatic version. The last of the 6265's and the first of the 16520's share a serial number, "R".

The manual wind R-series reference 6265 is extremely rare and highly desirable by collectors because it was the last year the manual wind Daytona was produced. In addition, it has a short production run of approximately six months so there are not many manual wind R-series ever found on the market. Typically they are in mint condition since it is newer than most manual wind Daytonas and are of great quality because of newer and more advanced parts. The R-series 6265 is a great looking model with Daytona written in the big red format and a sound investment due to its limited production.
