Last week we spoke about great patina, and now we are talking about new old stock. This is Omega's 14k Cosmic Moonphase, one of Omega's most complicated watches from the 1950s that is considered to be Omega's first calendar wristwatch.
The Cosmic features both a triple date calendar and moonphase. The large square case of the Cosmic measures 33x33 millimeters and has beautiful sculptured faceted flame lugs. It looks great on the wrist and competes with any modern design today. This is Omega's model number 3944 and it is equipped with Omega's caliber 381 17 jewel copper color manual wind movement.
You do not see many square moonphase watches from the period, and this particular Omega Cosmic is a true time capsule that is new old stock. I have never seen this type of condition on the Cosmic as they are usually over-polished and have refinished dials. This watch probably sat in a drawer for its entire life. I have seen these watches trade from $4,500 to $15,000 depending upon the condition and metal.
