Summer is officially over and on to the fall watch season which features many watch shows and major auctions that will start in late September. Typically the watch market slows down in the summer but this summer the steam kept rolling. I attended shows in Las Vegas, Kansas City, Los Angeles, New York, and Chicago. While there were no major watch auctions this summer the shows were very active and substantially larger than previous summers. Modern pre-owned Rolex is extremely strong as prices continue to rise every month especially the gold and two-tone models. Other high-end luxury brands such as Patek Philippe and Vacheron Constantin are also performing extremely well with most of the watches being sold to Asia. Rose gold is the metal of the summer and continues to be high in demand.
On the vintage side there seems to be a shortage of good quality and therefore when a good watch does appear it is sold rapidly. I have seen some beautiful vintage watches trade this summer such as a Rolex Seadweller Patent Pending, Patek Philippe reference 1518 in rose gold, 1945 Vintage Panerai California dial, and a tropical Rolex Daytona. With a strong summer of sales, the fall should be very interesting with many nice watches and a lot of buying and selling.
